New rules for old wood-burning stoves

In December 2020, the Danish Parliament passed a new law that requires all properties that are taken over April 1, 2021  or later need to replace the stove. The rule applies if the stove was produced before 1 January 2003The replacement must take place within one year of the date of acquisition.

In future, when changing ownership, it must be stated whether there is a wood-burning stove on the property, as well as its age. If there is any doubt about the age of the stove, a declaration must be obtained from the chimney sweep. The declaration is then sent to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. It is the Danish Environmental Protection Agency that ultimately decides whether a wood-burning stove should be replaced or not if there is any doubt about the age of the stove.

It is estimated that there are approximately 260,000 wood-burning stoves in Danish homes that were produced before 2003. These will all need to be replaced or dismantled at the next change of ownership.

If you own a house with an old wood-burning stove, you do not need to do anything. The stove must only be replaced when there is a change of ownership. Change of ownership due to divorce or an undivided estate is exempt from the scheme. Similarly, tiled stoves, mass stoves, antique wood-burning stoves and open fireplaces are exempt from the new scheme.
