Black glazed bricks can be a big nuisance if they reflect light into the neighbor's garden and house.
In a recent case at the Western High Court, a homeowner was ordered to have his black glazed bricks made matte on the side facing the neighbor. An expert measured the gloss number from the sun's reflection on the bricks to be 80, which is equivalent to having a strong lamp right in your face. This should be seen in relation to the fact that in many places there is a requirement that the gloss number must not exceed 10-30.
In the specific case, it was assessed that the neighbor's house had lost DKK 150,000 in value as a result of the strong glare from the glazed tiles, and combined with the fact that it would only cost DKK 17,500 to matt the roof, the Western High Court assessed, based on the general rules of neighbor law, that the homeowner was obliged to have the roof matted.
The ruling shows that if you are bothered by your neighbor's roof, and it is not a trivial nuisance, you can, with the help of the court, demand that the nuisance be brought to an end.
